I’ve noticed project management generally follows the same sort of rebirth you describe here. Most project management methodologies are conceptually the same but with different labels. Remember Rapid Development? Project management certification has always seemed to me simply learning new labels for the pieces of the software development life cycle (SDLC). If you pay extra, you can earn black belts and speak cult-like lingo.
Agile is great in the right hands but also easily abused. We got here from shortcuts. When you remove a required part of any process, you unravel the culture that supports the process. People no longer feel they have to perform the step since the methodology didn’t seem to need it. I think this may be why when I talk to people about Agile from other companies, it’s like we are discussing completely different concepts.
